The company’s purpose to nurture healthy connections with nature extends beyond its herbs through the Gaia Herbs Roots Initiative, its social impact program, and is guided by the company’s three pillars of connecting people, plants and the planet. Gaia Herbs recognizes the interconnectedness between food, farming and social justice issues, and acknowledges the responsibility it must challenge systems and practices that contribute to the status quo. The company donates 5% of all its hemp profits to organizations working to apply regenerative principles to both land and communities through farming practices and the empowerment of marginalized farmers. In 2019 and 2020, Gaia Herbs awarded small grants to four organizations whose missions are to increase medicinal herb access in BIPOC and underserved communities.
As a reflection of its devotion to protecting the planet, Gaia Herbs uses eco-friendly, recyclable glass material for its packaging. Gaia Herbs offers the world’s first herb traceability program, meetyourherbs.com, providing complete ingredient transparency and showing results of all the screening tests its products undergo, validating purity, integrity and potency. Fruit & Nuts Apple Cinnamon with Almonds from Icelandic Provisions
Fruit & Nuts combines rich, creamy whole-milk skyr with pieces of real nuts, seeds and fruits for a unique and satisfying texture. Skyr is an Icelandic dairy product, and it’s been a provision of Icelanders for nearly 1,000 years.
Icelandic Provisions was developed in partnership with Iceland’s oldest farmer-owned dairy. It’s the only skyr made in the U.S. using the original Icelandic recipe with heirloom Icelandic skyr cultures. Icelandic Provisions’ skyr is much thicker and more densely concentrated than other yogurts. In fact, it takes nearly four cups of milk to make just one cup of skyr. On average, Icelandic Provisions’ skyr contains more protein and one-third less sugar than regular yogurts.
Fruit & Nuts comes with 11g of protein, less than 10 g of sugar per cup and no high-intensity sweeteners or artificial ingredients. Fruit & Nuts includes a mix of nuts and seeds (almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and flax seeds) for healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber, as well as real fruit pieces. The blend of healthy nuts, seeds and fruits are hand sorted and minimally processed.
To make Fruit & Nuts, Icelandic Provisions sources milk from 300 family-owned farms in New York. The dairy cooperative supports the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy sustainability initiative of a 25% reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2020, and its fruit supplier only sources coconut from countries that do not use forced monkey labor.
Pulp Chips from Pulp Pantry
Pulp Pantry transforms upcycled ingredients—the overlooked, nutritional byproducts of fruit and vegetable processing—into wholesome, better for people and better for the planet pantry staples. Pulp Chips are made from ecofriendly ingredients that fight food waste including organic vegetable pomace, leftover after juicing fruits and vegetables in collaboration with Suja Juice, and Renewal Mill okara flour, the byproduct of organic tofu production. These ingredients combined make a chip that contains more than five times the fiber of traditional chips, saving up to 38 gallons of water in each pound of ingredient upcycled.
Each bag of Pulp Chips provides nearly a full day’s serving of gut-healthy fiber, from upcycled ingredients like organic kale, celery and okara.
Pulp Pantry’s motto is “Waste Less, Thrive More.” The company has implemented Climate Collaborative’s commitments to fight food waste and work progressively to implement sustainable packaging. Pulp Pantry is one of the Collective’s founding brands with the goal to offset plastic recycling for flexible films with the company’s Plastic Neutral Certification by rePurpose Global. The company completed its Ellen Macarthur Foundation Circulytics analysis (receiving a grade “A” for its commitments to building the circular economy into our business practices).
Pulp Pantry’s founder, Kaitlin Mogentale, dedicates her knowledge and passion for sustainability in teachings at local schools (Garden School Foundation) and after-school programs (A Place Called Home) serving youth living in food deserts across Los Angeles, something the company looks to expand with monetary support for such programs as we grow.
